Opening on May 23, artist Yao Jui-chung’s work Incarnation will be showing at the upcoming exhibition Perforated City of Taipei Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA).
Curated by Hai-Ming Huang, Perforated City aims to provide a holistic view on the dynamic relations among time, space, architecture and people by looking at the apartment buildings in the city.
Yao Jui-chung’s Incarnation is a photography series that features the monumental god statues in more than three hundred temples, cemeteries, public parks and amusement parks around Taiwan. The series reveals a world of religious iconography based on and shaped by the self-image of Han people. These objects, manifested by the religious followers’ "powerful drives," have informed the folk life, religious culture and politico-economic relations intricately linked in the geographic space of Taiwan; and the series, with a macrocosmic view, displays an idiosyncratic "aesthetics of scale."
