Curated by Li Zhenhua, director and founder of Beijing Art Lab, the Film sector presents a program of short films and special screenings by and about artists. Known for exploring possibilities in imagery by breaking free from old forms, Yuan Goang-Ming combines symbolic metaphors with technological media. His video work The Strangers (2018) is selected to be part of this year’s Film sector. Southeast Asian immigrant workers crowd the platform of the Zhongli train station in Taoyuan, Taiwan, as Yuan shoots them with a high-speed camera through the window of an arriving train. These strangers, captured on camera, turn into somber portraits that ponder the globalized world we inhabit, and the anxieties and apprehensions of modern-day people.
